On my last flight, I had a layover in DC. As I entered the first class café I saw a German lady and thought she was overdoing it. “I really felt like some kind of martian, reading my newspapers while everyone else was just staring into their iPhones and gazing at screens,” she said.
I went to another café in London a few weeks later. As I entered down an open boulevard-cum-corridor, men and women were perched on stadium-style seating (as if attending a lecture) and all were tapping away on MacBook Airs.
Inside the café I approached the counter and ordered a coffee. As I waited for the barista in his artfully groomed beard to artfully pour my flat white into a cup, I glanced around the room. One, two, three, four ... six, seven ... TWELVE people with their titanium screens flipped open and six of them wearing headphones large enough to cancel out the sound of a 747 at close range. Everyone looked extremely serious – no smiles.

What were they all doing? Was everyone working on a script? Were they polishing (embellishing) CVs for upcoming interviews? Were they updating profiles on various social networking sites? Did they have jobs? And why were two people in opposite corners of the room holding their phones horizontally in front of their mouths and chattering into them while also gripping their massive headphones like they were recording a song?

There were no copies of The London Times, no FTs, no magazines, and no printed Powerpoints; just angled titanium and back-lit Apple logos punctuating the industrial space. Curiously, the only texture in the whole space was provided by the metalwork and reclaimed wood in the café interior and perhaps the odd choppy haircut: everything else was crisp and sharp and angular and perfect and boring.
I perched outside to study the scene and shake things up. I pulled out my Friday edition of this newspaper and unfolded it across my lap – a girl perched above without headphones looked up, seemingly half startled. I then picked up the paper, gave it a good yank to fold it over and then folded it again to quarter-page size to read the Companies & Markets front page. This stirred more of the titanium set out of their uploading/surfing/ chatting to look around and figure out what that sound was and if it was going to stop. Then I remembered the German lady...
I feel like it's worse back home in Sacramento. Now that I think about it, it wasn’t only paper that was absent back home; but there wasn’t an iPad or reading device to be seen either. As I debated whether this was a good or bad thing I went in search of a bookstore there. And the best I could find was a spiritual bookshop that hardly passed for what I had in mind. I rarely see magazine kiosks or used book sellers, no chains and no independents. I feel sad for the local residents.

Anyway back to the airport in DC; as I'm boarding I was greeted by a friendly attendant with an armful of newspapers. “I’m sorry but we don’t have internet connection on today’s flight but would you like a FAZ, Handelsblatt, FT or IHT?” she asked. Around the cabin my fellow passengers were all manipulating their favourite dailies and the world finally sounded right again.

So most of you know that I am going to be living in London for school. And it's such an opportunity. I can not wait to go into job interviews and go on a rant about this.

And honestly I felt like blogging as soon as I landed through Heathrow airport, through customs. But I haven’t been able to get a stable wi-fi till now.

Bentley, Rolls Royces, Porche, Aston Martin are treated as like...BMW 5 series back home. It’s crazy.

As soon as we got settled in to the hotel we went flat hunting the very next day. I bought my ticket and hopped on the trains also known as a “tube” which in a British accent would be called the “chuybe”. lol. One thing Ive always wondered is, if English was actually created by the English, how come it’s spelled so differently. Lets take this “chuybe” thing for example, if its pronounced “chuybe”, why don’t we just spell it like that. Why spell it with a T? So if T sounds like “ch” then what does the actual ch sound like? I’ve never understood it.

I actually love the British accent. It’s so...higher up than everybody else.

The trains were really much smaller than the New York City subways but a lot more cleaner. Also the oyster card (metro card) is a tap and go type of thing rather than slide and go. I kept imagining those punk bands from the 90′s hanging out on the platforms.

One of the first places I got off was the infamous Oxford Circus.

I expected some sort of circus when I got off the trains.

Of course, there was no circus.

I walked up the stairs out of the station and still…no circus.

And that is because circus in the British language means an open circular area where several roads join. So don’t worry, there aren’t any clowns.

I remember how amazed I was when we were driving into central London. The buildings were so old and….English. Every single bus, and I mean every single bus is a red and a double decker! Just like that poster in Ikea! Every taxi reminded me of Mr. Bean’s car. It’s very diverse. There’s Asians, Black people, Muslims and South Asians everywhere. I really don’t feel that far away from home or feel too foreign.

London reminds me of three cities combined in a unique way. New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo.

New York: for obvious reasons. It’s the epicenter of the UK and has a financial market. The Tube is basically the Subway except nicer. And it has that, “New-Yorkish-feel”.

San Francisco: London has the laid-back, everybody-being-nice thing to it, very similar to SF.

Tokyo: The sense of style here is unique, just like in Tokyo. Even though it’s diverse and not a ethnogenisis, every body seems to have that Burberry-esque. Where as Japan everybody is CDG-esque.

As a kid, I’ve always dreamed of moving somewhere far away to live and work. I think San Francisco’s and Sacramento is a beautiful place, it will always be home, but I also don’t see myself living in one city for my whole life. Our lives are too short to be confined to one space. I found a “flat” (thats British for an apartment). Getting an internship (interview this Wednesday and throughout the month) and I’m still working on my research for India.

But man do I miss my family so much. The entire family came to help me set up which is by far the dearest thing any body has ever done for me. They left today, and I feel like these good bye’s to them are just getting harder and harder. I miss and worry about them too much.

I took a lot of pictures but I’m to lazy to upload them all today. Soon.

So last time I was in Chicago I was sitting in the United First Class Terminal in Chicago, and overheard an older gentlemen say to his wife “you can leave your bags there, nobody would steal anything here.”

That REALLY got me thinking about my habits in lounges when it comes to keeping an eye on my bags lol. While I’ll almost always briefly leave my bags unattended if I’m just going to get something to eat from the buffet, my behavior varies otherwise depending on the lounge I’m in.

And I think I figured out my pattern, subconsciously at least: in international first class lounges I have no problem leaving my bags unattended, but in business class or domestic lounges I’ll keep an eye on my bags at all times.

So like the Lufthansa First Class Terminal in Frankfurt has a restaurant area, and when I go to have my meal I just leave my bag in the seating area without thinking twice about it.

I guess what I can’t quite figure out is why I think that way. Is it a function of first class lounges being less crowded than business class lounges, or is it a function of trusting the guests in the lounge more? I don't know..

You know, I've been meaning to write a funny feel-good post about some random stuff for the past few weeks now, but every time I decide to put aside some time to write, something bad happens that sours my mood and screws with my train of thought.

My feelings are no longer pure or genuine because my mind is clouded by other emotions.

How do I write about happy things if I'm not happy?

Sometimes I feel like I'm on the brink of madness or something.

Like I'm getting close to the final straw.

There’s always something.

School issues, family issues, relationships with everybody

A whole lotta issues.

And they only get more and more complicated.

I’ve had a problem with stability my whole life. Im not used to living in the same place. I'm not used to the same people sticking around.

I'm not used to being used to anything.

I think my lack of stability has also caused me to become a very insecure individual.

I dont believe anything will last long enough.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to believe that everything will last forever, but I'm not sure if I'm built like that.

I'm not sure if I'm built to believe in things like that.

I'm scared that as soon I get used to it, it’ll end. Like, something is going to go wrong

I guess we can call it my self defense mechanism.

Something's wrong with me.

I guess this is why I work so hard. I feel like everything else in my life is so up and down, and I feel like my work is the only thing that brings me satisfaction. The idea of progress. The idea that I can be better than I was yesterday and I'll be greater than who I am today. The idea that success and money will grant me freedom, liberty and time.

I feel like if I became successful and had money like some of the closest people to me, I could pay off all my personal emotional debts and begin to live and look after those I care about.

If I had success and money. I feel like if I had success and money, I would be able to not work so much, I would be able to spend more time building a better relationship, having time to show the woman I love that I really do love her. I could maybe afford an engagement ring and maybe a wedding. I could buy a house and have kids, BY MYSELF. Not through a trust-fund or anything.

I know. I know. You're thinking money cant buy everything.

But money damn sure provides the means.

I just want things to start happening already.

I just want things to change...er not change?

I just want to be happy.

Like truly fucking happy.

Im working on a lot of things right now, both career wise and life wise. And things are ACTUALLY happening for me. Why am I still not the happiest person in the world. And after I go to my classes and stuff, they educate us about the people who are less fortunate. And here I am complaining about not being happy for some odd reason?

But I'm only human. And I'm hoping something gives.

And to anyone who spent the time to read this, I'm sorry for having to share such negative thoughts again but thank you for always being my therapist.

I would have called someone to vent, but its awkward to do that and I really hate venting because I hate forcing people to hear my bullshit.

Anyhow, I should probably get back to work.

What if you knew you were dying?

Maybe I've said this before on the blog, or maybe I haven't. I'm pretty sure I have though lol.

I have a bad memory.

But I'm always thinking about death. And considering all of the good things that are coming up for me, I'm always wondering if these last moments will be my last.

Did I kiss my mom before I left the house? Have I told my siblings Im proud of them? Did I tell her I love her? Do my friends know they mean the world to me?

I just finished watching 50/50, that movie with Joseph Gordon Levitt. I wont spoil it completely, but he gets diagnosed with cancer and finds out he has a 50% chance of surviving.

Like imagine, living life knowing that your days are almost up.

What would you? Where would go? Who would you see?

I just hope that before I die, everyone that I care and love knows that I do. And I've been able to do something for them to know that. And I hope that when I die, I've created libraries of memories for them to hold on to, long after I'm gone. I hope that before I die, I've taken enough pictures and told enough stories to not fade in their minds. I guess, the one thing I always hope for is that I mattered to someone.

I keep forgetting how fortunate I am. I think that's something that we all forget sometimes. We’re so busy being upset at what we don't have, and we forget how lucky we are for all the things that we do. As cliché as that sounds.

I don't want to write too much about this topic because it's really bumming me more than I already am, I don't want to preach and I'm sure none of you guys want to read about this on a Friday night lol.

I just wanted to share my thoughts.

I used to be a firm supporter of the “keep Wi-Fi the hell off of my planes” movement. While I love the internet, airplanes are the one place I was able to disconnect. As soon as that aircraft door closed I knew nothing in the world could bother me for the next several hours (other than nuts not heated to my optimal temperature, but that’s neither here nor there).

So I guess you can officially say I’ve taken a 180 when it comes to in-flight Wi-Fi now.

I remember when I first landed and how it felt to be on the other side of the world.

I remember how beautiful it was.

The humid heat in the middle of the night. The brightness during the day that was almost blinding. The people and the faces. The food and the tastes. The marketplaces and the malls. The futuristic structures.

I cant remember a more epic and adventurous trip.
I never learned so much about myself.

The craziest thing is, Tokyo is just a little dot on the globe. On the atlas.

I wanna visit every dot on the map.

To Tokyo, thank you for welcoming me. Thank you for showing me the beauties of your city and your country. You’ve changed my mind about a million things. I only hope that every other trip I make around the world will be as grand as mine in Tokyo. But do not worry, I'll be back before you know it.

To be able to see the things a U.S. Marine must see. That is exactly what you get from the incredible photos of “Basetrack” from his deployment late last year to Afghanistan’s Helmand Province with 1st Battalion, 8th Marines. The 528 images — nearly all of which were shot with an iPhone and filtered in Hipstamatic — paint a pretty stark picture of life as a Marine deployed overseas.

It really does make you stop and think about your daily life and what life must be like for all of the people fighting and trying to survive in Afghanistan.

Writing at least 9000 words a week on iWork. This better be worth it.

Dear son/daughter,

I am writing you this letter even before you are born…in case I never get the chance to say all of these things to you later on.

I have no idea how old you’ll be when you find this post but I hope that Ive been a good father to you thus far.

I'm hoping I had you before I turned 45 and Im not too old or too uncool for us to hang out.
I'm hoping that we have a great relationship and that Ive spent a lot of sunny days under the sun with you and even more rainy days under a roof by a fire place.
I'm hoping that I have raised you well and that you’re a smart, intelligent and strong individual.
I'm hoping I didn't miss your basketball games, school plays, graduations and all of your important days.
I'm hoping I haven't missed too many family dinners.
I'm hoping I haven't missed too many bedtime stories.
I'm hoping I was there to hug you during your first heartbreak.
I'm hoping I was there to wipe your tears too.
I'm hoping I didn't miss your youth.
I'm hoping Ive been a father.I'm hoping I haven't broke your heart by working too much and never being home.

I always said, if I had a child, I would be a father.

If I haven't been around, please know I tried.There isn't a day in my life that goes by where I don't imagine the day you exist and how happy you’ll make me.
I imagine you coming home from school and being so excited to see me.
I imagine you jumping into bed and waking me up because you’re scared of the monster you just dreamed about.
I imagine me dressing you up in 8 different layers of winter clothes before driving you to school.
I imagine you in pajamas under a Christmas tree tearing through gifts and screaming with excitement.
I imagine you falling asleep while I tell boring stories of my younger days.
I imagine us watching home videos together and you laughing at how corny all the music I used to listen to sounds.
I imagine the day you move out and I have to send you off to college, and you’re mothers crying in my arms.
I imagine the day your mother and I watch you get married and the day you have a child and I become a grandfather.

I'm writing this post today because Ive been going through a lot of things thats been tearing me part inside.

I'm getting scared that I might not find a way to stabilize a lifestyle of travel, career, money, and a family in the future.
I'm so afraid that I'll die alone…and this letter is actually written for no one.
I'm afraid that my life will be purposeless.I just want time.
Time to be in love, time to build a family, time to live my life.
I hope you figure this out before I did…if I ever did.
I wish you good luck if you haven't yet.

Luggage Envy

I don’t often suffer from luggage envy, but on a flight back from Denver to Sacramento, I spotted a passenger who had it all figured out. While I’m not a fan of small wheely cases for men, this particular man had a generous, cabin-size wheely Rimowa case in a titanium hue with an elegant olive-green zip tote fastened to the front. I’ve put my back out more than a few times this year with carry-on luggage, so I thought it might be time to find something suitably butch on wheels. Hence, I got this Rimowa salsa air luggage for no more than $520.00. It's not too big where it looks like I don't know how to efficiently pack, but it's the perfect size and I love it.

When I feel really depressed and I have a bad day or something terrible has happened or I have to face something, I go through a very precise ritual getting dressed in the morning. In a sense it is armor; I’m building up a layer. If everything in my material world is in order, I will be able to get through it. I think that perfectionism comes from me being a Libra. My inner world is related to my outer world. If my house is a wreck, I’m a wreck. If I am together, that’s together. That’s a kind of balance. KBAI

They spend their lives striving and still don’t learn those lessons. Other people figure it out at age twenty and they’re completely balanced and together and understand how to keep things in check from an early age.

Houston Thoughts

I was in Houston last weekend. And had some random thoughts.

On one side of the lounger was my stack of reading for the weekend (the new-ish copy of Apartmento, the New Yorker, Bloomberg Businessweek, Spanish AD, German AD, Pin-Up and of course, Monocle) and on the other a sheaf of pages torn out of magazines from the past week. I was just about to jump into the New Yorker’s film reviews when I saw Toyota center light up during sunset.

As the sun started to dip towards the mountains, I jotted down a few other questions that have been troubling me of late. Perhaps you might be able to furnish me with a few answers to the following:

1. Why do newsreaders on the BBC wear so much purple and red? Spend a bit of time watching the BBC’s various new services and you’ll soon be convinced that there’s a substantial wardrobe allowance for presenters to buy as many purple, violet, poppy and cerise blazers, scarves, jumpers, ties and costume jewellery as possible. Do any of these colors really look that good on TV or flatter the wearer?

2. Has anyone designed a mountain bike that doesn’t look like a two-wheeled SUV? While in the mountains I started playing a game of ‘spot the mountain bike that you’d actually want to be seen riding’. For sure, mountain biking can be dangerous and aggressive but is it necessary for bikes to look like the spawn of a Hummer?

3. How much quality news time has been lost over the past five years to endless requests for viewer comment and feedback? I get the sense that years of proper broadcast journalism have been lost by appeals to “send in your views” and “tell us what you think”. I don’t really care what other viewers think, I just want to hear what the correspondent on the ground has to say.

4. What do people put in those massive wheely suitcases? Why would you travel with two, two-wheel suitcases the size of a tumble dryer? I’m baffled by such sights and wonder if the selling of such cases isn’t a huge health risk.

5. Who thought it was a good idea to allow those Mercedes vans to become part of the London black-cab establishment? These monsters are not only too big for their key purpose, they’re also airless and generally unpleasant to travel in.

Last Night at the Movies

So I saw Transformers 3 last night with Sukhi. And those of you that know me, I think movies like this are completely dumb, unrealistic, and normally have obvious plots. But after watching it, I noticed that there was a lot of effort put into the small things. Sound for an example. It goes without saying that it will likely go down in history as one of the most visually exciting films of our time. Under Bay’s direction, the sound team spent countless hours in the studio and in the field, mixing, recording and even creating sounds that matched up flawlessly with the film reels. It's really interesting.

Feeling Pretty Good

It’s Thursday night, and I’m flying over New Mexico right now destined to Houston.

I'm starting this post here but lets see where I am when I finish.

The last 12 months of my life have been so unreal and amazing.

I know its super cliche, but I really mean it when I say, I wish you were able to be with me when this was all going down.

Towards the end of September, I headed out to Germany, Tokyo, and India...where I was shown a whole new world. I saw things on a whole new scale that I was never able to even imagine. Massive and epic architecture, ground breaking technology, world’s biggest everything and the cars…omgggg. Someone hand me some new briefs. I still cant comprehend with the world outside of the States.

This was the first time I’ve traveled by myself. I loved learning about a brand new culture, eating new food, doing new things and meeting new faces. It was definitely an eye opener for me. It was an adventure I will never ever ever forget.

I don’t know if you guys have ever been to Germany before, but that place was unbelievably beautiful!

The villa I stayed in was huge. It was something like 6 huge bedrooms each with its own individual outdoor shower! An infinity pool with a hot tub, private butler/chef/driver and damn near anything else you can imagine.

And as if that trip wasn’t enough, few months later after returning, I’m going out with the most perfect girl in the world :)

On top of everything, I get to study in London this upcoming Spring.

I’m still typing this post from the airplane, and am almost in Houston. I cant stop smiling about how crazy my life has been.

All done.

How did I ever get this far?

As a kid, I used to spend hours in the public library reading Time magazines, staring at pictures and reading stories about the rest of the world. When you grow up without a lot of money with traditional immigrant parents, the last thing you ever imagine yourself doing is traveling and seeing the world. I mean, you’d probably dream about it, but you probably wouldn’t really believe or plan on it. They just want you to study and get a stable job and start a family. But boy after my Brother was born, did we get lucky.

“Travel? To where? With what money? Who pays the bills when you’re gone? Can you afford to take days off work? Traveling is for rich people. You’re just a regular person. Be real. This isn’t a dream. Wake up.”

Im awake, Dad. I owe it all to you, and somehow this is still real.

I know I often write about how crazy I think the way my life turned out, but thats because I still cant believe it sometimes. I go through the motions everyday and do what I do like clockwork…but if I ever get a chance to just sit, breathe and think, I find myself lost in disbelief because like I said before,
I never imagined any of this…even if this is barely anything.

Everything in my life is different.

I never realized this until just now, but I guess me majoring in International Relations was my way of subconsciously taking one step closer to seeing the rest of the world. And my love for travel certainly helped huh?

I cant stop smiling to myself because I find it so unreal that Im typing this post while I’m a couple thousand feet in the air on a private jet.

Who would have thought right?

I’ve been on a plane almost every month for these past few years.

How did life ever get this high? Literally.

I still cant believe it. For everyone who reads my blog and aspires to be anything or dreams about something, I hope you find some sort of hope and inspiration in the good fortune I’ve received from hard work, amazing friends, good love and good luck.

All I can say is, never stop believing. Never stop dreaming. Always keep it moving.

Thank you to my loves, my mother and Kathleen for being my sense of home the whole time I was gone.

I feel truly blessed.
